How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters in Michigan?

Ask a contractor in Rochester how many calls they get for ice dam damage in January, and they'll tell you it almost always traces back to a clogged gutter the previous October. The same pattern holds in Troy and Lake Orion. Michigan's freeze-thaw climate, heavy deciduous tree cover, and dense clay soil create a combination that makes gutter neglect more expensive here than in most states.

Here's the short answer, then the details: twice a year — late April or early May, and late October or early November. If you have a lot of mature trees within 40 feet of your roofline, add a third cleaning in August.

Why Michigan Is Harder on Gutters

Most national advice says "twice a year" without qualification. Michigan needs more nuance. Here's why:

Freeze-thaw cycles. When a gutter is even partially clogged, water pools and freezes. Ice builds up under the shingles and works its way into roof seams. The first warm day produces a leak that looks like a roof problem but started at the gutter. This cycle — clogged → ice dam → water intrusion — is the most expensive gutter failure pattern in Michigan, and it costs homeowners $1,500–$4,000 in roof repairs on average.

Heavy deciduous tree canopy. Southeastern Michigan (Rochester Hills, Troy, Birmingham, Lake Orion) sits under some of the highest tree density in the state. What Happens If You Skip the Fall Cleaning
